Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation in Health Set for Dec. 4-6

The 10th Annual Conference on the Science of Dissemination and Implementation in Health is co-hosted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and AcademyHealth and is set for December 4-6, 2017 in Arlington, VA. This purpose of the conference is to bridge the gap between research, practice, and policy in health and health care. This year’s theme, A Decade of Progress and the Path Forward, will reflect on the accomplishments of and challenges to the field, and will focus on opportunities ahead.  Go here for more details.

SEC Academic Leadership Development Program Names Corso and Okech as Fellows

Associate Director of OIBR, Dr. Phaedra Corso,  and OIBR Affiliate and Grantsmanship Development Program participant, David Okech (GDP Class of 2014-16), have been named as Fellows to the SEC Academic Leadership Development Program for the 2017-18 academic year.

The SEC Academic Leadership Development Program seeks to identify, prepare and advance academic leaders for roles within SEC institutions and beyond. It has three components: a university-level development program designed by each institution for its own participants (i.e., fellows); two SEC-wide workshops held on specified campuses for all program participants; and a competitive fellowship designed to provide administrative growth opportunities for former fellows.

OIBR Participates in a GRA-backed Alliance that Received a $55M NIH Grant

The Owens Institute for Behavioral Research is proud to be a part of one of the largest research grants in our state’s history! In September, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded $55 million to expand a collaborative partnership that includes the University of Georgia, Emory, Georgia Tech and Morehouse School of Medicine. The group will be known as the Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA) and will focus on improving clinical research and translating results into better outcomes for patients.

Lillian T. Eby, PhD., Director of OIBR, will be representing OIBR’s expertise with faculty development and mentoring on this important grant. A member of our Grantsmanship Development Program, Dorothy Carter (GDP Class of 2016-18), is also a part of this effort and is offering her expertise in team science and leadership.

There are over 25 people across UGA Colleges/Schools that are Co-Investigators on this grant. They include: Family and Consumer Sciences, Agricultural & Environmental Sciences, Public Health, Pharmacy, Education, Terry School of Business, Franklin, Vet Med, Graduate School as well as the Institute of Gerontology, Center for Drug Discovery, Center for Family Research, Regenerative Bioscience Center, Clinical and Translational Research Unit, Institute of Bioinformatics, Office of the VP for Research, Innovation Gateway, Owens Institute for Behavioral Research, Center of Teaching and Learning, Online Learning, Office of VP for Instruction, Cooperative Extension, and Archway Program.

Phaedra Corso, Associate Director with OIBR, Profiled in President’s FY2017 Annual Report

Corso Phaedra We are so proud of our very own Phaedra S. Corso, Ph.D.!! She is one of fifteen people profiled in the Fiscal Year 2017 Annual Report from the President’s office. In addition to being the Associate Director for the Owens Institute for Behavioral Research, she is also a UGA Foundation Professor in Human Health and the Director of the Economic Evaluation Research Group. Her research analyzes the costs and impacts of public health interventions on critical societal challenges such as violence, substance abuse, and childhood obesity. She is a two-time recipient of the College of Public Health’s Outstanding Teaching Award and a recipient of the UGA Creative Research Medal. For more information, go here.

OIBR Recently Received Four New Funded Grants

Things are really hopping at the Institute!! We are pleased to congratulate the following OIBR Affiliates and Fellow on their funded grants this summer:

Affiliate Denise Lewis (Human Development & Family Science) received $3+ million from the National Academies of Sciences and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for her project Community and Family Resilience, Strength and Well-being: Sociocultural Influences on Cambodian and Laotian Refugee Communities’ Responses to Environmental Changes. Affiliate Margaret Caughy (Human Development & Family Science) received $2.8 million from NIH for her project entitled Self-regulation Development and the Transition to Middle School. More about Dr. Caughy here.

Affiliate Sun Joo (Grace) Ahn (Journalism) was awarded $3.3 million from NIH for her research project The Virtual Fitness Buddy Ecosystem: Using Digital Technology to Promote and Sustain Moderate-to-Vigorous Intensity Physical Activity in Children. Fellow Leann Birch (Foods and Nutrition) and Affiliate Justin Lavner (Psychology) teamed together and have been awarded $2.7 million from NIH for their project Responsive Parenting, Sleep, and Rapid Weight Gain among African American Infants. More information…

New Director of UGA Obesity Initiative Named

Please join us in congratulating OIBR Fellow, Leann Birch (Foods & Nutrition) for being appointed the new Director of the Obesity Initiative on campus. Dr. Birch has done pioneering work on obesity and is a leader in research for early obesity prevention. This is great news for UGA!

The mission of the Obesity Initiative is to promote transdisciplinary research that will inform effective and sustainable obesity prevention programs for children and families. The Obesity Initiative will be working in collaboration with the University of Georgia  Center for Family Research (CFR), conducting research to reduce health disparities in obesity among low-income African Americans.

Two New Fellows Join OIBR This Summer

Dr. Dorothy Carter is with UGA’s Psychology Dept. She is a participant in our Grantsmanship Development Program and was recently awarded a $1 million grant from NASA. Dr. Carter is an excellent example of how OIBR can work with and support faculty members. We are so proud of you Dr. Carter!

Nathan T. Carter announced as newest OIBR Fellow
